Why Jim Corbett Is One of India's Best Birding Destinations

Jim Corbett National Park sits where the Shivalik foothills meet the Terai plains, and that mix of habitats is what makes bird watching in Jim Corbett so rewarding. In one morning drive you can move from dense sal forest to open chaur grasslands, riverine scrub, wide shingle riverbeds and the edge of the Kalagarh reservoir on the Ramganga.

Corbett Tiger Reserve officials put the bird list at more than 500 species, and the reserve's Key Biodiversity Area factsheet reports over 580, including 51 of the subcontinent's 69 diurnal raptors and 13 Near Threatened species.

How a Birding Safari in Jim Corbett Works

Guests on an open jeep safari, the way birding is done inside Jim Corbett
Birding inside the park is done from a registered safari vehicle.

Birdwatching inside Jim Corbett National Park is done from a registered safari vehicle with a forest guide on board. A private jeep (up to six adults) suits birders best because you set the pace and can wait at a mixed flock or a perched raptor. The canter is a shared vehicle used for Dhikala and works for budget trips.

Safari permits are booked through the official Corbett Tiger Reserve system in each traveller's name, for a specific zone and shift. Morning shifts are usually the most productive for birds.

Important: walking is not allowed inside the tourism zones; you can step out only inside Forest Rest House compounds. Birding on foot is possible outside the core, such as along the Kosi river near Garjiya, subject to local rules and with a guide.

How We Plan Your Jim Corbett Birding Tour

Corbett Package Tour is based on NH-309 in Dhikuli, minutes from the Kosi river and the park's Ramnagar-side gates. We build birding trips around habitats rather than whichever permit is free.

  1. Share your wish list. Tell us your dates, group size and the birds you most want to see.
  2. Get a zone mix. We combine habitats, such as Dhikala grassland, Bijrani forest and a Kosi river morning.
  3. Permits and private jeep. We book official permits and a private jeep with the forest guide required by park rules.
  4. Stay close to the gates. Stays in Dhikuli and Ramnagar, or a Forest Rest House when available, for early starts.

Birdwatching in Jim Corbett: FAQs

How many bird species are found in Jim Corbett National Park?
Corbett Tiger Reserve officials put the figure at more than 500 bird species, and the Key Biodiversity Area factsheet for the reserve reports over 580. The list includes raptors, woodpeckers, hornbills, kingfishers, river birds such as the Ibisbill, and many winter migrants from the Himalaya and Central Asia.
What is the best time for birdwatching in Jim Corbett?
December to March is the best time for birdwatching in Jim Corbett, when resident birds are joined by winter migrants such as Wallcreeper, Ibisbill and many raptors. November and April are also good. March to June brings breeding activity and summer visitors, while July to mid-October is limited because most core zones close for the monsoon.
Can you walk for birdwatching inside Jim Corbett National Park?
No. Inside the park's tourism zones you must stay in the jeep or canter with the forest guide, and walking is limited to Forest Rest House compounds. Birding on foot is possible outside the core, for example along the Kosi river near Garjiya and in buffer areas, subject to local forest rules and with a guide.
Which zone is best for birdwatching in Jim Corbett?
Dhikala is best for grassland birds and large raptors along the Ramganga, while Bijrani offers a strong mix of forest and river species close to Ramnagar. Jhirna and Dhela are good for forest and grassland birds and usually stay open all year. Sitabani and Pawalgarh in the buffer are known for woodpeckers and quieter birding.
Can I see the Ibisbill in Jim Corbett?
Yes, in winter. The Ibisbill is a sought-after wintering bird on the stony beds of the Kosi river, with sightings reported near Garjiya and Mohan. It is best looked for from roughly December to February, early in the morning, scanning shingle banks carefully because it blends in with the stones.
Is a jeep or canter safari better for birdwatching in Corbett?
A private jeep is better for birdwatching because you control the pace, can stop for longer and have only your group on board. A canter is a shared vehicle used for the Dhikala zone, which suits budget travellers but leaves less room for long stops and photography.
What should I carry for a birding safari in Jim Corbett?
Carry binoculars (8x42 or 10x42 work well), a camera with a telephoto lens if you photograph birds, a field guide or birding app, muted-coloured clothing, warm layers for winter mornings, water and the original photo ID used for your safari permit.
How many safaris do I need for birdwatching in Jim Corbett?
Plan at least two to four safaris across different zones, plus an early morning along the Kosi river outside the core. Combining a grassland zone such as Dhikala, a forest zone such as Bijrani and a buffer forest such as Sitabani or Pawalgarh shows you the widest range of birds.
