The crown of Corbett

Why Dhikala Is Jim Corbett's Most Famous Zone

Dhikala lies deep inside Jim Corbett National Park, where the Ramganga river opens into wide grasslands called chaurs, framed by the Shivalik hills and the edge of the Kalagarh reservoir. The open landscape lets you see far, which is why a Dhikala zone safari is the first choice for many wildlife lovers and photographers.

  • Elephant herds – large groups often graze the grasslands, especially in summer
  • Tigers – sightings rise in the drier months from March to early June, though never guaranteed
  • Deer – spotted deer, hog deer and sambar in the open chaurs
  • River life – mugger crocodiles, gharials and fish eagles along the Ramganga
  • Birds – grassland birds and raptors; see birdwatching in Jim Corbett

Day visits

Dhikala Canter Safari in Jim Corbett

The Dhikala canter safari in Jim Corbett is the only way for day visitors to see Dhikala. It is a shared open vehicle of about 16 seats, run under the forest department and booked per person through the official Corbett Tiger Reserve system.

  • Two shifts – a morning and an afternoon canter; exact reporting times are on your ticket
  • Longer than a jeep safari – Dhikala lies deep inside the park, beyond Dhangarhi gate
  • Per-seat booking – good for solo travellers, couples and groups on a budget
  • Photo ID – each traveller's original ID is checked at entry

Good to know: the canter follows a fixed route and pace, so you cannot ask it to wait longer at a sighting. If you want that flexibility, try for a Forest Rest House stay with a jeep.

What is the Dhikala canter safari in Jim Corbett?
The Dhikala canter safari is a shared open vehicle of about 16 seats run under the forest department, booked per person. It is the only way for day visitors to enter Dhikala. When is Dhikala zone open?
Dhikala zone usually opens on 15 November and closes on 15 June. It stays closed during the monsoon. Dates follow Corbett Tiger Reserve notifications and can change with weather, so confirm before you plan.
Why is Dhikala the most famous zone of Jim Corbett?
Dhikala has the park's largest open grasslands, called chaurs, along the Ramganga river, with views of the hills and the reservoir. The open landscape makes it easier to see elephants, deer, raptors and, in the drier months, tigers, which is why it is popular with photographers.

Book as early as the booking window allows, especially for weekends, holidays and the March to June peak. Dhikala Forest Rest House rooms are even harder to get and can sell out soon after release, so plan several weeks ahead.

For day visitors there is no choice: the canter is the only option. If you can get a Forest Rest House room, a jeep inside Dhikala gives you more flexibility and early-morning and late-evening drives, which photographers and wildlife enthusiasts prefer.
