History of Jim National Corbett Park
Corbett National Park is the oldest National Park in Asia, which was established in 1936, before this, the area was given to the English government to protect wildlife by the king of Tehari, In 1860 British government kept this in its hand and started protecting it. In the starting 19th century, the British govt started efforts to save the forest, and this task was given to Sir Ramsay ( British Major who was the commissioner at the time ) In this the first step was taken in 1868 when the British forest department was established and took over the land and this whole area and after some time in 1879, these areas concluded into a reserved area. In 1900 many British officers suggested making a national park on this land ( E.R Stecans and E.A Smythies) this was made a reserved area for the National Park in 1907 from 1907 to 1930 out was under process. After a long time, this dream came true and the reserve area was named Hailey National Park,( Governor of United Province). In starting only timber cutting and hunting of deer was allowed inside the park but soon after the establishment of the park new rule came and killing and Capturing the animals and birds is prohibited in this area.
Asia’s first National Park got renamed in 1955 as Ramganga National Park ( lifeline Of Corbett Tiger Reserve) but in 1956 due to some reasons, it was named again Corbett National Park on the name of Sir Advert Jim Corbett who was a famous hunter, Naturalist and an author (man-eater of Corbett). As time passed the area of this Park was increased, the government concluded little areas in the park and after the second world war, the park was increased. In 1991 798 km2 area was included in the park as a buffer zone, this area includes the Sona Nadi and Kalagarh Forest division. Corbett Reserve area has the honor to be one of the 13th protected areas which are covered by the world wild fund under the terai Landscape program. The main aim of this program is to protect the terrestrial flagship species. Tiger, Asian Elephant, One-horned rhinoceros by restoring the corridors link to 13 protected areas.
